Eagle-eyed guests who have recently visited the New Prague Library may have noticed a unique black box outside the entrance. You guessed it: Extended Access is now available in New Prague as of June 1, 2023!
What is Extended Access?
Extended Access (EA) is a library card add-on / membership service that provides self-service access to some Scott County Libraries outside of regular staffed hours (6:00am - 10:00pm, every day). It does not replace or reduce regular staffed hours, it provides our community more opportunities to use the library when it works best for them.
Since September 2021, hundreds of EA members have enjoyed this service at both the Jordan and Elko New Market Libraries. We're pleased to be more available than ever to early risers, remote workers, technology users, homeschooling families, childcare providers, and others who love using the library.
What can I do with Extended Access?
You can enjoy most of the same in-library services you enjoy during regular staffed hours, but expect the experience to be entirely self-service. This means that library staff won't be present to assist. (No worries, we're still available to assist during regular staffed hours.) Here are some popular activities our EA members in Jordan and Elko New Market enjoy:
- Using computers and Wi-Fi at their leisure
- Exploring the children's area with kids (caregiver supervision always required)
- Borrowing items before their commute, after sports practice, on a holiday, and many new times convenient for their schedule
- Working remotely or studying in study rooms during quiet times
How to Sign Up
If you've already signed up and New Prague is your preferred library, you're all set. EA members can automatically use the service at any EA-equipped location.
If you're new to the service, you can drop into any Scott County Library during staffed hours to complete a 15-minute orientation with a staff member. Our staff will have you watch a quick orientation video, sign a user agreement, and update your library account. Make sure to bring a photo ID so we can verify your address and contact information. We're also happy to show you how to use our computers, self-checkout machines, or any other services during the process.
