On August 16th, 2017 severe weather moved through the Scott County area. Scott County’s storm spotters were activated at 6:40PM when a potentially tornadic storm cell was observed travelling north from the City of Kilkenny in LeSueur County. That storm cell was tracked across rural areas from Union Hill to St. Lawrence Township with no reports of damage.

Emergency Management observed a second storm cell with rotation travelling north from the area of Highway 13 and 220th St E. Outdoor warning sirens in Prior Lake and Shakopee were activated and the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for the impacted area. That storm cell continued north, northwest in a line passing towards the intersection of Marschall Road and 140th St NW in the City of Prior Lake at which time National Weather Service radar indicated the possibility of debris in the air. The storm continued to travel through Shakopee then into Carver County. The tornadic weather was followed by heavy rains. Rain totals neared four inches in some areas of Prior Lake, Shakopee, and Savage. Storm sewers in many of the affected areas were unable to keep up, resulting in localized flooding.

Crews will be surveying the path of the storm at sunrise trying to identify any storm related damage. Any resident that has incurred storm related damage is encouraged to report the damage to the emergency management voicemail at 952-496-8381. Any resident needing emergency assistance should call 911.
