[ARCHIVED] K-9 Floyd Completes Narcotic Detection Training

Deputy Nate Olson and K-9 Deputy Floyd

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is
pleased to announce K-9 Floyd has completed Narcotic Detector training.  The addition of K-9 Floyd, a BelgianMalinois, was made possible by a generous donation from a private Scott County
resident last spring.

Since joining the Sheriff’s Office, K-9Floyd and his handler, Deputy Nate Olson, have attended multiple training
sessions through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).  K-9 Floyd’s initial training, commonlyreferred to as ‘K-9 Boot Camp,’ lasted 12 weeks and prepared Floyd in tracking,
apprehension, and building and article searches.  The training was hosted by the St. PaulPolice Department’s USPCA certified instructors.

Following his initial training, K-9
Floyd and his handler successfully completed another USPCA hosted trainingprogram on narcotic detection.  K-9 Floyd
is certified in the detection of narcotics such as methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and many more illegal substances.  The dual certifications make K-9 Floyd Scott
County’s first dual purpose K-9 who is certified in both tracking andapprehension and the detection of narcotics.

“Having K-9 Floyd complete these complex
training certifications will not only be a huge asset for our office, he willbe yet another resource the Sheriff’s Office can provide to assist local law
enforcement,” said Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen.  “Deputy Olson has a lot of experience withK-9’s; our community can expect great results from K-9 Floyd.”
