On May 5, 2019, at approximately 8:48 p.m., Scott County deputies were advised to respond to Pleasant Lake in Helena Township in reference to people yelling for help. Local residents began searching the lake in canoes as deputies were en route.
Upon our arrival, we learned that Alexander Graves (22), Devin Hawkinson (22), and Christopher Renze (23) (all of Shakopee) had safely made it to shore on their own.
The three individuals reported that they were canoeing when their canoe capsized. They did not have life jackets and became tired and cold while swimming to shore, prompting one of them to call for help.
No injuries were noted and all three declined medical attention.
“Whether or not you are able to swim, or consider yourself a strong swimmer, wearing a life jacket is essential,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen. “It's a simple decision that could save your life during a boating emergency.”
Scott County deputies were assisted at the scene by New Prague Police Department, New Prague Fire Department, Jordan Fire Department, and North Ambulance.
