On July 15, 2019, prior to the storms arriving in the area, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management division activated its trained weather spotters at approximately 5:30 p.m. Belle Plaine Fire Department was also activated for weather spotting.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Scott County at 5:44 p.m. and a flash flood warning at 6:49 p.m.
At 6:58 p.m., the NWS issued a tornado warning for southern Scott County after radar-indicated rotation was detected near Belle Plaine. Outdoor warning sirens in Belle Plaine and New Prague were activated at this time.
There were several reports of wind damage in Belle Plaine Township between Hickory Boulevard and Union Hill Boulevard. A farm located on the 8300 block of Union Hill Boulevard in Belle Plaine sustained significant damage to several outbuildings. The homeowners reported hearing the outdoor warning sirens and immediate took shelter.
Other damages reported in this area were of downed power lines, downed trees, and other debris.
Significant wind damage was also reported in Savage. Quarter-sized hail was reported in Lydia in Spring Lake Township. Minor street flooding in the northern sections of Shakopee in Savage.
No weather-related injuries were reported as a result of this storm.
“Despite the damage, we are fortunate that no one was hurt,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen. “Residents were alerted by the outdoor warning sirens and were able to seek shelter and stay safe.”
The National Weather Service will be sending assessment teams to survey the damage of the impacted areas. As of the time of this press release, the NWS has not made an official determination of tornadic damage in Scott County.
