On November 19, 2020, at approximately 1:57 p.m., Scott County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch reported a stolen motor vehicle out of Carver County that was believed to be in the area of Cleary Lake Regional Park in Credit River Township.
The vehicle was reported to be a 2017 Cadillac Escalade, equipped with OnStar tracking service. Carver County Dispatch was able to obtain the location of the vehicle via OnStar and a vehicle matching the given description was quickly located by a Scott County Deputy in Cleary Lake Regional Park.
When responding law enforcement attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled the scene and was pursued for several miles before crashing into a ditch at the intersection of 190th Street East and Fairlawn Avenue in Spring Lake Township.
The vehicle was occupied by two adult males, who fled the scene on foot. Deputies apprehended the passenger of the vehicle near the crash site, who was identified as Korey Maurese Hale (21) of Minneapolis. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Zachary Dawson, Jr. (20) of St. Paul was located and apprehended approximately an hour later in a wooded area on the south side of 195th Street East, east of Vergus Avenue. Dawson resisted being taken into custody, refused to comply with deputies’ commands, and was subsequently bitten by the Sheriff’s Office K9 prior to being taken into custody.
Both individuals were transported to the Scott County Jail. Hale was booked for the following offenses: Fleeing on Foot; Receiving Stolen Property; Obstructing Legal Process, Possession of a Weapon without a Permit; 5th Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance; and Introducing Contraband into a Facility. Dawson was booked for: Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle; Possession of Stolen Property; Fleeing on Foot; Obstructing Legal Process; and Felony Possession of a Firearm.
Items contained within the involved vehicle included a firearm and other property believed to be associated with other thefts in the area.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in stolen vehicles being used to commit thefts in our local communities and we will continue to investigate these crimes vigorously,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen. “As move into winter, please remember to lock your vehicles and never leave them running and unattended.”
The Scott County Sheriff's Office was assisted in this incident by the Elko New Market Police Department, Mdewakanton Public Safety, Prior Lake Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Allina Ambulance.
The investigation in this matter is ongoing and no further details will be released at this time.
