Sheriff's Office receives drone donation

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office now has a drone to utilize in different types of situations thanks to a generous donation by Frandsen Bank & Trust in Jordan, MN.  The drone was presented to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office during a November 17th presentation at Frandsen Bank & Trust and is the ninth drone they have donated to law enforcement agencies in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The $10,600 Autel Robotics EVO II Dual drone was purchased through Maverick Drone Systems out of Savage, MN, who demonstrated the capabilities of the drone during the presentation last week.

Drones have numerous benefits for local law enforcement, including, reducing response times, assisting in search and rescue operations, maximizing search areas, assisting in crime scene investigations, accident scene reconstruction, assessing damage after and during natural disasters, conducting threat assessments for use at a public events or spaces where there is a heightened risk to the safety of participants or bystanders, and more.

Scott County is known for its farm fields, lakes, riverways, and wooded areas, which can pose challenges to law enforcement when we are trying to locate people.  The drone can help eliminate many of these obstacles.  It can quickly be deployed and fly up to 45 mph, so deputies can virtually be on-scene in a matter of minutes with an expansive aerial view.  The drone is also equipped with GPS and thermal imaging to help find people anywhere, day or night.

“This drone will be valuable tool to help us do our job safer and more efficiently,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen.  “We sincerely appreciate Frandsen Bank’s support and commitment to our community.”

All Sheriff’s Office drone activity will conform to applicable policies and procedures, state laws and regulations, and best practices.  Prior to operation, all authorized operators and required observers will complete all required Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and department-approved training in the operation, applicable laws, policies and procedures regarding use of the drone.
